Accident Investigation

This intensive workshop is recommended for any worker, supervisor
or manager who will, or may be called upon to investigate a work site
incident or accident, either alone or as part of an investigation
team. Topics to be presented will include: accident causation; safety
during the investigation; gathering evidence; recording the scene;
photographing evidence; interviewing techniques; and preparing
reports with effective recommendations. Students will have the
opportunity to work through case studies.

hazardous atmospheres. Students will have an opportunity to practice
using breathing apparatus during the course. This course is approved
by the Oil Sands Safety Association .

An intensive course intended for workers, supervisors and safety
personnel who work in or around confined spaces, or who may be called
upon to rescue a worker from a confined space. The course includes
information and rationale for safe rescues from confined spaces.
Students will be required to perform actual rescues from a simulated
confined space while wearing a self contained breathing apparatus.
Prerequisite for this course is Confined Space Entry - Level I.

valid for three years.

Confined Space Entry - Level III
(Planning and Managing Work in Confined Spaces)
Course length: 8 hours (1 day) Usual times: 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Course fee: $ 185.00 per person
This course is designed for supervisors or managers who are
required to plan, manage or supervise work in or around confined
spaces. Participants will evaluate a typical confined space and
develop a safe work plan for the work to be performed in that space.
Topics presented and discussed will include: developing a safe work
plan; permits; the pre-job meeting; confined space entry procedures;
and closing out the job.

valid for three years.

Standard First Aid & CPR 'A'

This course is recognized by Alberta &
Saskatchewan O. H. & S. as the minimum training requirement for a
Standard First Aider (Alberta) and/or a Class A Attendant
(Saskatchewan) as defined in the Regulations, and is intended for
anyone who does not have immediate access to emergency medical
services. Students in this course will learn artificial respiration
as well as how to deal with choking; shock; unconsciousness; severe
bleeding; head and spinal injuries; and fractures of the upper and
lower limbs. Also included is Level 'A' CPR (one-rescuer, adult casualties).
This course is certified by St. John Ambulance.

LIVE FIRE
This course is designed for workers who may be required to use a
20 lb. or 30 lb. stored pressure or cartridge operated extinguisher
to respond to a small fire. Participants will learn the theory of
fire, the various types and classifications of fires and the proper
use and handling of hand held fire extinguishers including monthly
inspection procedures. The course includes approximately one and a
half hours of classroom instruction and two and a half hours of
practical hands-on exercises for each student including a least two
discharges of fire expellant in a live fire situation.
FIRE SIMULATOR
This course is intended for workers who may be required to use a
20lb or 30lb stored pressure or cartridge operated extinguisher to
respond to a small fire. Participants learn the theory of fire,
various types and classifications of fires and the proper use and
handling of hand held fire extinguishers including monthly inspection
procedures. The course includes approximately one and a half hours of
classroom instruction and two and a half hours of practical hands-on
exercises utilizing a Fire Simulator. Students get all the aspects of
a real fire (excluding heat) and fight the simulated fire with a
compressed-air pressured extinguisher. The advantage of this course
is that it can be held inside a building, and is
Environmentally-Friendly as there is no reside or left over
extinguisher repellant to clean up.

Safe Operation Of Lift Trucks (Forklift)
Course Length: 4 hours (Theory), 6 Hours (Theory and

The theory aspect of this course involves applicable Legislation;
components, weights, stability, and characteristics of lift trucks;
safe handling of fuels and batteries; Daily Maintenance; and

daily check and operating a forklift through an obstacle course.

Defensive Driving

This class is offered as a defensive driving / professional driver
improvement training. Students training extends beyond basic tips and
techniques necessary to becoming a defensive driver. Students will
also learn the value of how proper driver attitude plays a
significant role in being a good defensive driver. Classroom training
includes PowerPoint and video presentations.
Students successfully completing this training, who hold a valid
Alberta vehicle operators license may qualify for a reduction of up
to three demerit points.
This class is certified by Attitude People Inc. and is recognized
by the Alberta Government.

OSSA Regional Orientation

This PowerPoint presentation prepares students for working
in and around Oil sands projects in the Fort McMurray, Alberta region
by identifying hazards; policies; and practices associated to these worksites.
Upon successful completion of this course students will receive an
OSSA orientation certificate.

Detection of Gases & Nitrogen Safety
Course length: 6 hours Usual times: 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 pm.

This course is designed for personnel working with or near
flammable or toxic substances in the oil and gas industry. It
includes an introduction to flammable and toxic substances;
principles of gas/vapour detection; proper operation, care and
preparation of Tube-Type Detectors and Electronic Monitors;
interpreting gas reading; and control methods. This course also
includes an introductory orientation of the effects of Nitrogen
gas/vapour concentrations in many atmospheres. Included in the course
are lectures, demonstrations, class discussions, group exercises,
hands on practice, and video.

All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Operator Course
Course length: 8 hours Usual times: 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 pm.

The ATV operator course is a nationally recognized program
developed by the Canada Safety Council (CSC) and certified by the
Alberta Safety Council (ASC).
This one day course is designed to train the operator how to
safely operate an ATV. It includes classroom and practical
training with the emphasis on operational skills.
Students will normally bring their own machine. In special
circumstances, ASTEC can provide an ATV. We require a minimum 5
business days notice prior, to make these arrangements. Students who
are provided an ATV for use during the course will be charged an
additional $120.00. Payments for this service must be finalized prior
to the course date. A valid credit card number must be provided to
cover any damages incurred during the training activities. NOTE:
Students can make their own equipment rental arrangements if they
choose. In the Lloydminster area we can recommend Auburn Rentals. You

PRE-COURSE EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST
All students participating in the ATV operator course are
requested to check over their ATV "PRIOR" to attending the
course. ASTEC will not postpone any course training events due to
students' equipment failure. Be sure to check the following:

PREREQUISITES
All students participating are required to meet the following prerequisites:

Wear a DOT approved safety helmet.

Students will supply their own ATV that must pass a pre-inspection
prior to the start of the course.

Appropriate PPE must be worn and be of a minimum long-sleeve shirt
& pants. Riding gloves. CSA approved eye protection. Riding
boots must provide ankle protection.
